The festivity Beltane originally takes place on the 1st of May, at the midpoint between spring and summer. The flowers and herbs we planted during the last event are growing, and we celebrated this by sharing food and dancing. The 1st of May also marks the International Labour Day, which we took as an occasion to talk about the organizing work we put into our institutions.
We invited different student or student-teacher groups that are organizing within and against educational institutions in Rotterdam. After short presentations about their contexts and the work they do, we split up in smaller groups and discussed questions relating to the importance of bottom-up learning, sustainable organizing, inclusivity, and decolonizing. Together we tried to understand how different groups work around these terms, look for ways to resist their appropriation, and exchange strategies. Afterwards we turned towards to the Rooftop, decorating the poles with crepe paper in the fashion of the Maypoles, and shared stinging nettle soup. We will concluded the evening with some psychedelic folk by Rotterdam-based band Chypko Flowers and danced to Farlow and OG Wang's melodies.
