Collective Crafterra is a clay inquiry and event organized in collaboration with SPIN and Autonomy Lab. The inquiry consisted in diving into the world of the ground, we researched different types of clay in Rotterdam, experimented harvesting, processing the clay, making instruments, pots and even clay (hampo) cookies. The first part of the public event consisted of sharing our collected tools on how to harvest, recycle, bake and make instruments with clay. The second part was a clay TerrOrchestra with Jatiwangi Art Factory(JAF) as a guest, JAF is a community-based organization that closely works with the local roof tile industry workers in the Jatiwangi region in West-Java, Indonesia since 2005. Their projects focus around ‘tanah’, the Indonesian word for soil, land and earth. JaF works with tanah in a material way, making ceramics and doing research around soil, and in a political way, investigating and redistributing land ownership through collective practices.
All together, across seas, we played and jammed
with our harvested clay instruments.
