Inspirited by the Imbolc celebrations of this time of year about spring and rebirth, which stems from the breeding cycle of sheep, we hosted a lunch curated around sheep products in the fancy board room of the university.
From the food scraps of this lunch, we bundle dyed fabric together in the fabric station, and even brought some sheep’s wool to experiment with!

On the 23rd of February, we had the pleasure of hosting an event for Imbolc, celebrating spring and rebirth, which stems from the breeding cycle of sheep and the birth of the first lamb. We hosted a lunch curated around sheep products in the fancy board room, and from the food scraps of this lunch, we bundle dyed fabric together in the fabric station.
The day started early, assembling wraps and making salads. We brought yoghurt and cheese from the farm that we visited in the west of Rotterdam. We also took the opportunity to prep the fabrics for dyeing. By midday, people started arriving, and some joined us to prepare the food and set up the board room table for lunch.
At 1pm, the lunch began, during which we invited people to answer engage with our question ‘menu’ including "What role does food play in your life?" and "What foods do you associate with the different months?" The responses were recorded on the table cloth that we natural dyed in preparation for the event, creating a mapping of peoples experiences with a wide diversity of food cultures.
After lunch, we headed to the dyeing lab in the fabric station for the natural dyeing session. We had saved up the scraps of onions, beetroot, and passion fruit while cooking, and some participants brought additional materials such as turmeric, coffee, and tea. Starting with an explanation about how natural dyeing works, we then moved on to experimenting with different ingredients to create unique patterns on the fabrics.
Overall, we enjoyed food together, had engaging conversations, and learned about natural dyeing. It was a lovely way to celebrate the beginning of spring!
